What is supported, tested or still uncertain?
The upstream README reports a ReSkate 1.1.3 test with Proton Experimental on CachyOS, including joining and hosting. It describes Steam Deck as expected to behave similarly but untested, and separately warns that the new independent-folder launcher has not been tested on Proton. Those qualifications matter more than a general “Linux supported” label.
| Component / layout | What the sources actually establish |
|---|---|
| Older client beside Skate.exe | The pinned README reports a historical 1.1.3 / Proton Experimental / CachyOS test with the launcher beside Skate.exe; this is not a 2.1.2 test. |
| v2.1.2: separate ReSkate folder | Documented, with a different command. Explicitly untested on Proton in the checked snapshot. |
| Steam Deck client performance | No frame-rate, graphics preset, battery-life or map-compatibility benchmark was performed for this guide. |
| Native Linux dedicated server | A separate headless server asset exists. It does not provide a native Linux client or let you run the game without its required files. |
Use the command that matches your folder layout
Start with a Steam account that owns skate. The 2.1.2 README puts ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll in their own folder, such as ~/Games/ReSkate, then sets launch options on skate. itself. Replace /home/you/Games/ReSkate with your actual absolute path. The launcher downloads its supported game copy there and needs about 14 GB free.
bash -c 'exec "${@/*EAAntiCheat.GameServiceLauncher.exe//home/you/Games/ReSkate/ReSkateLauncher.exe}"' -- %command%“Cannot run from Steam’s folder” and Flatpak paths
Issue #229 contains a report that placing ReSkate elsewhere under steamapps/common still triggered the folder check; the reporter said moving it outside that tree resolved that case. A later Flatpak Steam report described needing write/create access to the chosen folder. These are user-reported workarounds in a closed thread, not a tested instruction to grant broad filesystem access.
- Use a genuinely independent path, such as ~/Games/ReSkate, instead of a sibling directory inside steamapps/common.
- Make the launch option point to the exact launcher location. A command copied from someone else’s home directory will not identify your file.
- If Steam is installed through Flatpak, inspect permissions for that one folder. A report about Flatpak permissions does not establish that native Steam needs the same change.
- Record the path and package type if the error persists; do not assume that a closed issue means every Proton path problem has been fixed.
Steam is running, but multiplayer is unavailable
Launch through skate.’s own Steam entry to retain its app ID and Proton prefix. In the October 17 review, issue #88 remained open and its older same-folder command needed updating. The 2.1.2 README now provides the separate-folder command above, but does not verify every Proton multiplayer case.

The October 17 review of issue #184 found separate Steam Deck reports of a load freeze and collision without visible geometry. A suggestion to change Proton versions was not a confirmed fix. The 2.1.2 README separately retains the narrower map-first workaround for switching from a custom map into a server on another map.
Read the source ↗Stuck on “Launching”: what the closed issue proves
Issue #156 originally described an infinite “Launching” state on 2.0.2, and the reporter also saw it after trying 1.1.3. On October 16 the reporter said the launcher-managed game download appeared to resolve their case, and the issue is closed. This supports a user-reported resolution for that case; it does not establish a general fix for every launch hang. Collect the current session log beside Skate.exe under logs/ReSkate.log if your case differs.
- Record SteamOS / Linux distribution, native or Flatpak Steam, Proton version and the exact launcher version.
- State whether failure occurs before the launcher opens, during game download, at “Launching”, or after a map begins loading.
- Include the launch option and relevant error lines after removing personal paths and any sensitive information. Never share Steam credentials or a sign-in QR code.
New player report: audio crackling at 60 FPS
An October 25 Reddit report describes Steam Deck audio crackling at 60 FPS, mostly in San Vansterdam, and improving at 30 FPS. Another player reports normal audio and suggests comparing simulation rate, upscaling and graphics settings. No author-confirmed fix or controlled comparison is available. Record your map, frame target, simulation rate, Proton version and mod list, and compare one change at a time before reporting results. This thread does not establish general Steam Deck compatibility or a required graphics preset.

Frequently asked questions
Is ReSkate Steam Deck Verified?
This guide does not establish Steam Deck Verified status. The reviewed ReSkate README explicitly calls Steam Deck untested; its older successful Proton test used CachyOS and ReSkate 1.1.3.
Read the source ↗Can I install the Linux server archive to play on Steam Deck?
No. ReSkateServer-Linux is a headless dedicated server, not the playable client. The documented client route uses the Windows launcher and game through Proton.
Read the source ↗Should I use Proton Experimental, GE-Proton or another build?
The upstream historical test names Proton Experimental. The reviewed issues do not establish one Proton version that fixes every current client, graphics or custom-map problem. Record your exact version when comparing reports.
