ReSkate version, Steam build and game data are different numbers

Issue #235 reports a mismatch even after updating skate. in Steam. That makes sense when the live game and the community project target different builds. The supported_build.h contract pins the executable and game-data identity; the launcher’s release manifest separately pins the Steam content to download. A larger version number in an issue title is not evidence that GitHub’s latest stable release has changed.

The three version labels to record
LabelChecked value / meaning
ReSkate release tagStable v2.1.2, published October 24 at 17:18 UTC (October 25, 01:18 in China). Older prerelease files used the same number.
Steam app / buildApp 3354750; supported Steam build 25414733. This is the base-game build, not a ReSkate version.
Game-data changelist29544144 in the reviewed supported_build.h. It identifies the expected data files, not a second Steam build to install.
Manifest identityThe release’s launcher.json pins depot 3354751 and manifest 4621099302092747785. Use the launcher’s supported download flow.

Use an independent folder for the supported build

The current README says the launcher keeps its own copy of the game so Steam updates do not overwrite that copy. An error refusing Steam’s installation directory is a separate check from a damaged or unsupported executable. Issue #234 confirms players encountering that folder change; follow the documentation rather than copying another user’s modified executable.

  1. Close the game and preserve your existing mods and saves before changing the installation layout.
  2. Download the player ZIP from the original GitHub Releases page. Extract ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll into a new empty folder, for example C:/Games/ReSkate, outside Steam’s game installation.
  3. Run that launcher and use its Steam sign-in/download flow with an account that owns skate. The README allows about 14 GB for the game copy.
  4. Let the supported download finish, then press PLAY. On later starts the documented flow checks the files and fetches missing content.
  5. If it still fails, record the exact error and the folder containing the launcher. A wrong-folder message, download failure and build-validation failure require different evidence.

“The Steam download did not finish”

In the October 17 review, issue #261 remained open despite the reporter’s later QR-sign-in success. Their log showed a Steam credential error. The 2.1.2 README supports QR sign-in or username/password with Steam Guard; neither method is a universal fix for unrelated download failures. Read the actual account, Steam or disk error reported by the launcher.

ReSkateLauncher.exe or ReSkate.dll is missing

For a first client installation, choose ReSkate-2.1.2.zip in the reviewed release, not a server archive or GitHub’s automatic Source code ZIP. Issue #266 contains a contributor reply pointing to the separately published launcher and DLL assets when a user could not locate them. Those assets are on the original release page; this site does not mirror them. If a file disappears after extraction or updating, that is a different symptom and the missing-file thread does not establish its cause.

Keep a useful error report

Use the log location documented for your active game directory: logs/ReSkate.log beside Skate.exe. Include the supported-build mismatch text and the stage where it appears. Do not patch the build identifier or combine data from different game updates: the reviewed source explains that native hooks and game-data checks depend on the exact supported build.

  • Record the launcher version, runtime version, Steam build message and whether the supported download completed.
  • State whether the launcher is in an independent folder and whether Steam or ReSkate last changed those game files.
  • If Linux is involved, include the launch option, Proton version and native/Flatpak Steam package type.
  • Share only relevant log excerpts after reviewing them for personal information. Never include passwords, authentication codes or sign-in QR images.

October 22 clarification: ReSkate stays on a fixed game build

ReSkate stays on its internal game build 20260929. The current stable 2.1.2 manifest pins Steam build 25414733; these identifiers refer to different build systems. Updating ReSkate does not mean support for the latest retail update. Keep the independent folder and let the launcher verify or download its pinned game files.

RESKATE / ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Why does the newest Steam update still say “wrong build”?

The checked release manifests pin Steam build 25414733. The current main README explicitly says ReSkate stays on internal build 20260929 rather than following newer Steam updates. Record the game build and ReSkate version separately, and use the documented launcher download into an independent folder.

Does “Steam build 25414733” mean ReSkate 2.1.2?

They identify different things. 25414733 is a skate. Steam build; v2.1.2 is a ReSkate release tag. Record both when reporting a problem.

Is QR-code login a confirmed fix for all download failures?

No. The issue #261 reporter described success for a credential error, and the October 17 review did not establish a general fix. Version 2.1.2 documents QR sign-in as one supported authentication route; use the actual log to distinguish sign-in, ownership and disk failures.
